The History of Flag Day

"… that the Flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation."

~ The Continental Congress approving the official design of the national flag on June 14, 1777, during the Revolutionary War. Some suggest the British flag inspired the use of red, white and blue, though these colors came to represent virtues: valor, purity and perseverance.
