A few interesting stories we covered this week on SmartHERNews.com ...

Shooting at Georgia high school. Two students and two teachers were killed, and nine others injured, when a 14-year-old student opened fire on Wednesday morning at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. In what is still a rare move, the father was also arrested on charges related to the shooting.

After the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in May 2022, Jenna sat down with the Executive Director of ALERRT (a national leader in active shooter training), Pete Blair, Ph.D., to discuss what it takes to stay safe. While related to a separate tragedy, the insights from Dr. Blair remain invaluable. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ

An editorial note from SmartHER News: In our coverage of violent events, such as school shootings, we remain cognizant of the thin line between information and exploitation. To show our respect for the people impacted by the story and your time, we wait for on-the-record reports from law enforcement and government officials before sharing updates.

We do not name the shooter. Naming the shooter before the victims instantly elevates the alleged criminal before naming the innocent. Leaving the shooter nameless also ensures we avoid contributing to the celebrity culture that can arise around shooters โ€“ something we will not perpetuate at SmartHER News.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ Protests rock Israel after Hamas murder of 6 hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu remains steadfast that the Israeli operation must continue and rejects the suggestion that Israel has not made enough concessions to make a ceasefire deal happen, citing multiple times he says Israel agreed to a deal and Hamas wanted more concessions.

Former New York top aide acted as agent of Chinese government. Linda Sun, who was arrested this week on a variety of charges, held positions in the offices of two separate NY governors (Andrew Cuomo and Kathy Hochul) and worked for the New York state government for about a decade.

๐Ÿฅฉ New study shows some meats cause increased risk for type 2 diabetes. The study analyzed data from 1.97 million people across 20 different countries, making it the largest study of its kind focusing on the relationship between meat consumption and type 2 diabetes.
