🗞️ The Weekly Roundup.
President Trump gave a speech to Congress on Tuesday evening. He spoke for 1 hour and 39 minutes, making it the longest address to a joint session of Congress in over 60 years. In his speech, President Trump underscored policy positions such as immigration, tariffs and foreign policy, in addition to discussing cutting government spending. Here is the link to the full speech. Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) gave the official Democratic response to President Trump's speech. Here is the link to her full speech.
A peace deal between Ukraine and Russia has yet to be made. Meanwhile, the U.S. has paused military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. This comes after last week's tense meeting from the Oval Office between President Trump, Vice President JD Vance and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The pause may be short if President Trump and President Zelenskyy return to the table and have a positive conversation. President Zelenskyy posted on X on Tuesday about Ukraine’s readiness to work with President Trump. President Zelenskyy's chief of staff posted on X on Wednesday about a "meeting in the near future."
Tariffs on imported goods from Canada, Mexico and China officially went into effect Tuesday. They aim to curb fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration but are also stirring fears of a global trade war. They include a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with 10% on Chinese goods, in addition to the 10% already in effect against China. President Donald Trump then announced he would pause tariffs on automakers for one month to give them extra time to figure out how to move more factories stateside, followed by an announcement late Thursday that tariffs on some goods from Canada and Mexico would be paused for almost a month. Meanwhile, the stock markets fell in reaction to the tariffs, even after the pause announcement. Confused about tariffs or the markets? The measles outbreak in West Texas continues to grow, and one death has been reported. Earlier this week, Sec. Kennedy penned an official post where he stated, “I am deeply concerned about the recent measles outbreak.”
🙌🏽 What We Found SmartHER This Week.
Stephanie here with the SmartHER News crew. 👋🏽 We're taking a bucket list trip as a family over spring break, so I've been scouring the entire internet for all the travel must-haves. ✈️ I put all my SmartHER favorites for you HERE (along with a few of Jenna's favs, too).
My top 3 picks?
1️⃣ This magnetic tripod that's small enough to put in your belt bag. I wanted a way to capture memories with the WHOLE family in the shot 📸, but didn't want to carry around a giant tripod or selfie stick all day. This one does the trick, but also doubles as a phone holder on the plane. Win-win.
2️⃣ Speaking of belt bags, I was influenced by Jenna (and YOU) to buy this one. It's roomy, chic and only $20. Now that's SmartHER. 🤌🏽
3️⃣ A lesson I learned from my husband on our last trip? If flying, always drop an Apple AirTag in your checked bag. It not only helps you know when to start looking out for it on the baggage carousel, but if it gets lost ... you can locate it! 🙌🏽

🗣️ Conversation Starters.
A suspected thief desperate to hide stolen diamonds ... ate them. The Texas man is accused of stealing two pairs of diamond earrings from an Orlando shopping center. An x-ray shows what police believe are the $770,000 worth of Tiffany & Co. diamonds.

Many will spring forward on Sunday — gaining more daylight but also losing precious sleep. Unfortunately, health officials also believe the time change could harm your health too. Studies have found an increase in heart attacks and strokes right after the change to daylight saving time. P.S. Did you know that daylight saving time has ties to Benjamin Franklin?
Swear when you're hurt? You're in luck — not in trouble! Science says you have a higher pain tolerance. Researchers say swearing is "a drug-free, calorie-neutral, cost-free means of self-help," and past studies show it can increase your pain tolerance. This goes for multiple languages.
$19 for ONE strawberry? Thanks, but no thanks. LA's popular grocery store, Erewhon, promises a single $19 strawberry grown in Japan is worth the hype. The fruit, sitting on a cushion inside an oval plastic display, has gone viral on TikTok. Is this really the world's most delicious strawberry or just a social experiment? TBD.

And that's The Weekend Digest!

Jenna and the SHN Team
