#ICYMI: A little something extra to ease into the weekend!

  1. The Congressional Gold Medal is one of the nation's highest civilian honors (along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom) - and these "Rosies" finally received some long-awaited recognition. The first person to receive the Congressional Gold Medal? George Washington.
  2. 6 out of 12,000+: Six represents the number of "forever chemicals" (PFAs) covered in a first-of-its-kind rule announced this week by the federal government that will limit these chemicals in our drinking water (some of our states/cities already monitor and regulate this as well). 12,000+ represents the total number of identified PFAs "linked to a variety of health problems including cancer, thyroid disease, reproductive problems and heart and liver damage among other issues."
  3. No "safe level" of lead exists for children to consume - a fact repeatedly highlighted after a consumer advocacy group recommended children do not eat "Lunchables" after they discovered "troubling" levels of lead and sodium. For context, this study found lead in some of our fruits and vegetables.

"To the moon and back 33 times": The cicadas are coming, and researchers expect "up to a trillion" (SAY, WHAT?!) to emerge from the earth in certain parts of the U.S. soon. Exactly how many cicadas is that? This statistic 🌙 surprised us!

"Sakura": The Japanese word for cherry trees. This week Japan gifted the U.S. more Cherry trees to plant, continuing a custom initiated in 1912. Dive into the history of this diplomatic tradition HERE!

You're Not Alone: Have car headlights gotten too bright? Here's some helpful tips (and thoughts) on how to deal with the brightness.

HELP”: Three men survived on coconuts and well water for over a week when stranded on a remote island. A message spelled out in palm leaves led to their rescue.

The National Institutes of Health released a new study suggesting short-term incentives help increase activity. One of our favorite ways to maintain motivation? Fitness trackers!

The commissions we earn on products like these help support a free press.
  • Stay active at work! Take calls outside or on a treadmill to get more steps 🏃‍♀️ (a common practice on the SHN Team).
  • Get help from a friend! Set goals on your fitness tracker and ask a friend to hold you accountable.
  • Involve the whole family! One SHN team member unlocks screen time for her son once he hits 10,000 steps on his kid-friendly fitness tracker or plays outside for an hour.

And that's your weekend SCOOP!
